Our Home

We offer you our newly renovated little stone cottage (called 'Xitaka' by the previous owner) with a nice wine covered terrace. It lies on a little stream with big trees and has views of the beautiful hills and meadows full of olive and cork trees
In the surrounding garden you will find fruit trees, herbs and flowers.

Not far away there is a nice, hidden waterfall to enjoy hot summer days.
The cottage has one bedroom, a bath room, a fully equipped dining kitchen and a living room with a real comfortable sofa bed. We tried to keep the charme of the old cottage when renovating: we left the original features of the Lareira (big chimney) with an old wood burning stove and views of the old natural stone walls. Yet, for cooking you will find all modern appliances.
This is a peaceful place to relax where you can find your natural self - away from the hectic work life. No internet (though you can have mobile reception if you need it), no tv - nothing to disturb you. Get immersed in natures beauty by watching the surrounding and listening to the sheep's bells chiming.

Our Neighbourhood

Our cottage is situated in the Natural Park 'Serra de Sao Mamede' in the beautiful Alentejo Region close to the Spanish border. This beautiful wine and cork-tree region is mainly rural and offers lots of nature and many hiking and biking trails - and not to forget: many wine tasting opportunities.

The villages and cities in this region are small, but there is much to explore. Many of the nearby villages and cities are on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Mostly medieval and pre-medieval villages (some of them with well conserved castles) can be reached within a couple of minutes to one or two hours distance from our house. Just to name a few: Évora (one of the oldest cities Europes), Elvas (an amazing border-city between Portugal and Spain with an unique fortress), Marvao (and its beautiful medieval castle), Alegrete, Monserraz and Cáceres (astonishing beautiful Spanish city with a lots of history).

In our village you will find everything you need (a little supermarket, bakeries, bars, restaurants,and a petrol-station) and in 25 mins. drive (17 km) you will reach the regions capital Portalegre with everything else you may need (big supermarkets, train station, bus station, car rental, hospital.).

About Us

We are Evelyn and Klaus (meanwhile early retired from business consulting and IT) living in Germany, Italy and Portugal and our son Tobias, and his Brazilian wife Naiara living in Portugal. Sometimes we travel together. We used to have dogs and would enjoy pet care (we've already had horses, dogs, cats and fish included in our exchanges).

More about us

Our hobbies are hiking, cross country skiing and sailing, reading and Jazz music, nature and gardening, cooking - good food and wine. We prefer to exchange with places that have lot's of nature around or visit cities with very downtown homes. For us, home exchange is not only a cheap way of traveling but the best way to come to know the country and its people. We are experienced exchangers and will treat your home with the care and respect that we expect you to show to ours. As for 2019 we've accomplished 46 - all very positive - home exchanges.
