House In the village of Thomery near Fontainebleau
Our house is located in the village of Thomery, near Fontainebleau, forty-five minutes by train from Paris, between the River Seine and the Forest of Fontainebleau.
Built in the 1930s, it was entirely renovated about fifteen years ago.
With its stone walls and its pleasant garden, it's a wonderful place to relax in, and yet close by Paris.
Though sizeable (over 250 square metres, with five to six bedrooms, three bathrooms, two kitchens, two living rooms, and a garage for two cars), it has excellent insulation and efficient central heating (gas). It is quite comfortable in every respect. It is the perfect home for a family.
One of the highlights of our home is its garden, lined with several tall trees as well as fruit trees. Fresh apples, cherries, plums and local grapes ("chasselas de Thomery") - when the season comes, this garden is also a delight for the palate, not just the eyes!
Our place is within walking distance (ten minutes) of the forest of Fontainebleau forest, definitely the most famous and visited forest in France, and one of Europe's hotspots for rock-climbing, with stunning vistas - the perfect getaway from crazy city life.
Also, quaint painters' villages such as Barbizon and Bourron-Marlotte, as well as the medieval city of Moret, make this area really exciting to live in, or visit.
Our village, Thomery, is forty-four minutes from Paris by train; direct trains to Paris Gare de Lyon run every 30 or 60 minutes from the Thomery and Champagne-sur-Seine train stations (five minutes from our house), and every fifteen or thirty minutes from Fontainebleau and Moret train stations (ten minutes from our house).
It is also easy to reach Paris by car, as well as the Burgundy and Champagne regions (approximately an hour away).
Thomery is a short ten minute drive from Fontainebleau, with its world-famous palace (a must-see for anyone visiting France), the INSEAD Business School, and a vibrant Anglo-Saxon community.
Like Fontainebleau-Avon and all the villages in the area, Thomery itself boasts a substantial population of British and American expatriates. The International School in Fontainebleau makes the area a perfect place for English, as well as German speaking families.
To top it all, the Seine river runs through the village (at the bottom of the hill where our home is located, so we are safe from flooding), and local residents often swim in the river during the summer. The banks of the Seine are another favourite for relaxing walks.
We are a family of four, with two children, a boy aged twelve and a girl aged ten.
My wife Sophie is a high school teacher of French, and I'm an academic (researcher and lecturer at the Paris Diderot University).
We are currently looking for a long-term (three, six, nine or twelve months) home swap in the Sydney area, starting sometime after July 2018.
