Vieille maison de village
Our house is in the heart of a small village in the foothills of the Belledonne mountain range in the Alps. It is a large and very old house (Napoleon and his troops passed right by here in 1815 on their way to Paris to restore the Emperor's power). We have been working on restoring the house little by little for the past fifteen years.
Vaulnaveys is midway between the city and the mountains. It is only fifteen minutes from Grenoble, which is a very culturally oriented university town. We are also a 20-minute drive from the Chamrousse ski station. Other ski stations are scattered about in the mountains surrounding us. The mountain range soars up from behind our house and there are several hiking trails that start right in the village, and hundreds within a short drive. In summer you can drive up to the Laffrey mountain lakes for swimming, sailing, windsurfing, or renting paddle boats in less than half an hour. Vaulnaveys has a small grocery, a news stand and tobacco shop, a bakery, a pharmacy, and a postal service. There are also three restaurants and a café/bar in the village.
Uriage, a famous spa resort with beautiful rolling green lawns, is only three kilometres from our village. There are numerous shops and restaurants in Uriage. The three-star "Les Terrasses" is reputedly one of the best tables in the entire Grenoble area. In Uriage, one can sign up to use the tennis courts or the vast rolling greens of the golf course, get water treatments or massages at the spa, or go horseback riding.
The larger town of Vizille, seven kilometres from Vaulnaveys, is home of the French revolution and site of a magnificent renaissance château that houses the Museum of the Revolution. The château is located on the grounds of a vast and luxuriant public park. In Vizille there are two supermarkets, and many different types of shops and restaurants, as well as a movie theatre.
Now that I've described the surroundings, let's get to the house itself. It is approximately 115 m2 and is on two levels. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms (one of which serves as an office, with a fold-out couch/bed). If desired this third room can be turned into a full-fledged bedroom with no problem. There is a bathroom with bathtub/shower as well as a separate toilet. Downstairs there is a kitchen/dining room area separated by a bar and a living room with two couches (one being convertible) in a separate room. Off the kitchen, a small outdoor courtyard leads to the laundry room equipped with a washer, dryer and a large sink as well as a separate toilet.
The main entrance to the house is through a 70 m2 courtyard which is half planted with grass and has an ivy-covered wall and potted plants, rosebushes, wisteria and lilac. At the back of this courtyard is a large independent bedroom equipped with a small refrigerator and electric water kettle. There is also a large bathroom belonging to this extra room.
Parking is available approximately thirty metres from the house.
Mountains, hiking, skiing, golf, spa. In summer swimming, sailing on mountain lakes.
Fifteen kilometres from Grenoble, a university town with all that this entails.
