Italy / Gavorrano
Typical Apartment In Medieval Village In Tuscany
Delightful apartment, 50 m2, completely restored in Tuscan style, and located in the charming medieval hamlet of Gavorrano in the High Maremma mountains (Alta Maremma) in south-western Tuscany.
Gavorrano is located at the top of a hill, at an altitude of 273 metres, a few kilometres from the seaside (the Gulf of Follonica) and the beautiful beaches of Punta Ala and Castiglione della Pescaia.
The place is very quiet, with a great panoramic view over the countryside to the sea, where the sunset is a gorgeous sight.
The landscape is the typical Tuscan one, with vineyards, olive groves, rows of cypresses, and the Mediterranean flora with its beautiful colours and scents.
The apartment, recently fully restored, is really picturesque, with attractive wood beam ceiling and antique terracotta floor, maintaining the original features and the charm of the period when it was built. It is furnished with antiques.
It is on the ground floor of a characteristic two-storey building in a typical little street, and has its own entrance.
It consists of a small kitchen, a living room with a delightful old fireplace and a double divan bed, a bedroom with a double bed, and a bathroom with shower, and it can sleep up to four people.
We will leave local information in the house to help you with your sightseeing.
Gavorrano has a strategic and ideal location, being close to the sea (10 km) and to the mountains (Massa Marittima, 20 km), as well as to towns of art such as Siena (60 km), Pisa (100 km), Lucca (125 km), Florence (160 km), and Rome (185 km).
The islands of Elba and Giglio are within easy reach by boat.
The famous archaeological areas of Populonia, Vetulonia and Roselle, and the well-known nature parks of Uccellina, Castiglione della Pescaia and Punta Ala are just a few kilometres away.
For people who love bathing outdoors during the winter, spring and autumn, the thermal baths of Venturina are open all the year round.
Gavorrano is located on the wine road, and so it's an ideal place for tasting excellent wine (the most famous being the DOCs of Monteregio di Massa Marittima and Suvereto) and enjoying good Tuscan dishes. In fact there are a lot of restaurants in this region where you can appreciate delicious food and wine.
Wine production is the most important activity of the whole area, and Gavorrano is one of the main producers.
Gavorrano is also famous for its old pyrite mines, which are nowadays closed and included in the ArchaeoMine Park. In that park a theatre has recently been built, and during the summertime there are many performances by famous artists.
Gavorrano has also become famous through the history of Pia de' Tolomei, mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Divina Commedia, in Purgatorio Canto 5.
The clear seawater, the mild climate all the year long, the possibility of playing all kind of sports, and the availability of rocky or white sandy beaches make the Maremma coast one of the most popular holiday locations in the world.
This land, rich of history and medieval hamlets, will offer you an unforgettable holiday with its culture, art, beautiful sea, natural parks and unpolluted nature.
In nearby Follonica there is a great water park called Acqua Village, and in Gavorrano itself you will find all the services you need, and there are many shops (supermarket, post office, bank, tourist office, pizzeria, bars, confectioner's etc), within walking distance of the property.
Although Gavorrano is served by local buses, a car would really be necessary for sightseeing.
We are a couple: Rosy is fifty-five years old and Alessandro is sixty-four years old (a retired chemist).
We often travel with a couple of friends.
We are experienced home exchangers and enjoy this way of travelling very much.
