Comfortable Home In Redwoods
Our Home
Our secluded, comfortable, bright and sunny five-bedroom, two-bathroom home is set in five acres in the Northern California redwoods, near the wine country, and four miles from the pretty town of Mendocino.
It is a family home which sleeps 10-12, with an orchard, decks, an organic garden, a new kitchen, and lovely views through all the windows and skylights, as it adjoins Jackson State Forest (California's largest).
Our town, Mendocino, is historically preserved, and much sought-after by artists and people relocating.
We are four miles from the village, which has many cultural attractions.
We have DVD/VHS/CD, internet (two computers), hot tub, central heating, clothes washer and dryer, microwave oven, TV (but not cable), piano, dishwasher, parking, fire-ring, barbecue, hammock, and a fireplace.
We have two vehicles, a 2007 Honda Odyssey (seats eight) and a 2002 Ford Extended Cab pickup (seats six), which are available for exchange.
We prefer non-smokers.
There are two dogs and two self-sufficient cats, and several egg-laying chickens.
Our home is wheelchair accessible.
Languages spoken: English, Français, Deutsch, Espaà±ol.
We have done 25+ home exchanges.
Our Neighbourhood
Our home is near the coast, in the redwoods in the California wine country.
We are five minutes from the beach, and from the historically preserved village of Mendocino.
It is an artist's colony, and the schools here are excellent and above the state average.
It has been a great place to raise children for 25 years, with healthy living, and clean air and water.
There is a friendly and open community feeling to the town (population about 1,000).
It is easy to enjoy an active lifestyle, with plentiful forest bicycle trails (for mountain and road bikes), and some trails along the beach, and others along riverbanks, for walkers, horses or bicycles.
We have four adult and some kid bikes for easy rides into town.
There is easy access for hiking in forests and on beaches.
The next, slightly bigger town of Fort Bragg (population 7,000) is 8 miles (a ten-minute drive) from Mendocino.
There are more shops, a bowling alley, more golf, more tennis, health club and a new aquatic centre there.
Right at the town of Mendocino there is a beach where you can kayak, surf, skimboard, beach-comb, boat, sail, fish, scuba dive or tide-pool.
The town has a playground, theatre, art galleries, restaurants, tourist shops, and an excellent supermarket.
The coastline is spectacular.
San Francisco is 3½ hours away, Mount Shasta 5 hours, and Lake Tahoe 8 hours.
The home is set in five acres, with peaceful surroundings and privacy.
We are lucky to have great neighbours.
About Us
We are a family of five. Richard is the town CPA (accountant), and Karen is an attorney. Our three daughters are 19, 17 and 12 years old.
We are looking for a long-term home exchange. Ideally, we would like it to begin September 2010 and run through the school year to July 2011.
We have two daughters enrolled as undergraduates at York University, to begin September 2010.
We are also looking for a school, not too far from the home, for our 12-year-old daughter who will be with us.
I am British, my husband is American, and the children have British and American passports, so they can live, work or be educated in either country indefinitely.
We are very flexible in trying to work this out, and would contemplate being in two homes, spending half the time in each, if that became necessary.
If we needed to, we could also rent for part of the time.
Though we are five, one of the girls at least will be living in the dormitory, and a smallish home would be perfectly adequate.
We want to give the girls an opportunity to taste the UK's education system.
