The town has kept much of its unique medieval character. The Royal Castle separates the bay and is surrounded on one side with cafes, shops and art galleries. Caught between the bay and the sea stands the church, adjacent to the ancient lighthouse that now serves as a bell tower. The rose dome atop the tower is the trademark of romantic Collioure.
Built within a natural setting which is still intact, the city is located in an ideal area. You will be seduced by its 2 small ports and their colourful boats, its old streets and balconies full of flowers, its picturesque staircases, its promenade by the sea, its cafe terraces and its boutiques with coloured windows, its inspired paint artists, its museums and numerous festivities.
"In France there is no sky as blue as the one in Collioure.I just have to close the shutters of my room and I have all the colors of the Mediterranean before me." --- HENRI MATISSE
Collioure is quaint, charming, and welcoming.
Collioure is France's most popular seaside holiday destination in Catalan France, renowned for its fortified old town beauty, beachside cafes and restaurants, quaint yet lively, perfect climate, all year round local friendly Catalan population.
Known as the gem of the Roussillon coast, this small ancient fishing village on the Mediterranean lies at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. Situated in the heart of Catalan country, the local culture, folklore, tradition and food of Collioure reflect its proximity to Spain and its closeness to the sea.
The four small bays and beaches of Collioure are flanked by a 13th century castle and a medieval church. This most charming and picturesque town full of tradition and history captivated the imagination of painters Matisse and Derain who stayed in Collioure in 1905.
Although now a modern seaside resort the town has kept its charm and atmosphere. Collioure is the kind of place you fall in love with and want to come back to again and again to enjoy its uninterrupted sunshine (320 days a year), its unique charm and its breathtaking views
"We have fallen in love with Collioure and would love to buy a place for a retirement home base. We have zero willpower when faced with good food and wine and a serious weight loss regimen is in order before we travel again! The scenery is interesting (varied winegrowing between Cerbieres and Collioure) and gorgeous (mountains and sea). see travellers blog http://www.patstravels.com/Collioure.htm
