Live like a local

Is there a more laid-back metropolis than Sydney? If there is, we haven’t found it. It’s partly the weather, of course, and partly the fact that this wonderfully cosmopolitan city’s built slap-bang on one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. Life on the sparkling blue water is as important as life on the land: if you leave without going on a boat or a board, shame on you.

Sydney’s about the outdoors in a way few big cities are. How many major business centres do you know where the suits emerge at the end of the day, and head straight for the beach and a barbie? Not like you, of course, relaxing here on your Geenee holiday – you’ve probably been on the beach all day.

Surfing

Surfing for the first time, many people wonder what they’ve been doing for the last 40 years. Once you feel the swell of the wave, and the salt spray on the wind, nothing else seems to matter very much.

Sailing

All our sailing courses are linked to a yacht club, so you get to join in with their regattas as well as improving your sailing. You’ll soon be sailing the ever-popular evening regattas – followed, of course, by beers and a barbie.

Sailing

When you live in Sydney, the harbour is ever-present. You see it from the office, from your house, from the bus. You cross by ferry on your way to work. Sydney is defined by the ocean.

And they make the most of it. Ten minutes from the city is Rushcutter Bay, home to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA). These are the guys and girls who organise the Sydney-Hobart yacht race every year – you may have heard of it.

All our sailing courses are linked to a yacht club, which means you get to join in with their regattas as well as improving your sailing. And once you’re into the club, that’s it – you’re hooked. You’ll soon be sailing the ever-popular evening regattas (they’re always casting around for crew), followed by the mandatory beers and barbie.

Surfing

How many cities have surfing beaches attached? Not many, that’s how many. But Sydney without the beach would be like Paris without the Champs-Elysées. Even hard at work, Sydneysiders are just 20 minutes from a dip in the ocean.

These days, surfing isn’t just a niche activity for young men with long hair. It’s a year-round sport for men and women of all ages. In fact, the beaches are fantastic in winter, when the offshore wind helps curl those perfect waves.

Riding the waves for the first time, says one of our surfing buddies, makes many people wonder what they’ve been doing for the last 40 years. Once you feel the swell of the wave, the salt spray on the wind, nothing else seems to matter very much.
