Live like a local
This is a place busting with joie de vivre. A place where all the convenience, commerce and zip of North America meets the laid-back, cosmopolitan café culture of Paris. (Old Montreal is the closest you’ll get to France without actually going there).
But don’t come and live in Montreal if you’re looking for tranquillity and order. Montrealers are a passionate, lively lot, who know how to make the most of the countless bars and restaurants in their city. And there always seems to be at least one festival on, from world-famous jazz and comedy festivals to loads of smaller, but equally spirited, celebrations. Throw yourself in, go with the flow, and you’ll soon feel like you’ve been here all your life.
Local passions: Languages
As any traveller knows, you can’t get to the heart of a place without knowing at least a bit of the language. That’s doubly true in a bi-lingual city like Montreal – the biggest French-speaking city after Paris. This is where English and French cultures meet, find out how well they get along, and produce something uniquely Québecois.
So if you’re not a French-speaker already, you soon will be after some time as a Montrealer. You don’t need to spend every day repeating phrases into your Walkman – you’ll pick up the language at the same time as pursuing the passions and interests that drew you here. Whether it’s bar-hopping or hiking, skiing or skating, exploring Montreal and its environs means exploring the fascinating combination of languages, too.
Local passions: Snowmobiling
Quebec is a snowmobiler’s paradise. There are more snowmobile trails here than there are real roads – 33,500km of them. So it’s no surprise that snowmobilers flock here in their tens of thousands. And still they’re dwarfed by the immense – and largely uninhabited – expanses of the region.
In fact, snowmobiling is about the only way to discover the true majesty and beauty of Quebec. It also takes you to lots of good food and drink, courtesy of some exceptional restaurants and the traditional Quebecois hospitality. Basically, it’s a vast playground of snowy trails, frozen lakes and soaring mountains – punctuated by very good meals.
